Sid Poem by Francis Duggan

Sid

He had to work hard for his living and life's not been easy on Sid
He used to lay pipes for contractors just one of the hard jobs he did
To support his wife Maud and raise their two children but now he ia all on his own
And he does not like for to dwell on the hardships in life he has known.

Sid now he is in his late sixties for hard work too old and too tired
A man who is seen as quite ordinary yet one who deserves to be admired
As one who worked hard and paid his taxes though that's not seen as a big thing
'Tis only the praises of the so called high achievers that the masses do bother to sing.

His wife for a younger man left him that's going back a decade ago
And he feels that his hard work was wasted for his time he doesn't have much for to show
But then there are so many like him that's life one would have to suppose
He feels he would live his life differently if he knew back then what he now knows.

His son Tom died in a road accident so young he was only nineteen
And his daughter Joan is married with children in London his grandchildren he has not seen
He lives on his own in his modest bungalow his dog Sandy his only friend
For love and trust that is unconditional on your dog you sure can depend.

The years and the hard life is showing on Sid his hair it is silvery gray
He will never more lay pipes for a living since he has seen a far better day
He lives on his retirement pension and time has left him walking slow
But is he any different to others since time on us all it does show.
