Simple Blue Eyes Poem by Tara Jaquette

Simple Blue Eyes

When you looked at her, what did you see?
A naïve-looking face, with simple blue eyes, and a smile like the sky,
Just being with her- it made your social standpoint fly
She had not a face of beauty, but that of an innocent soul,
When she was with you, she knew nothing of an emotional hole

Time ticks on, and lack of mental connections starts to show through,
Where morals conflicted, there was always an apology due,
You can hardly see it, but your problems are just beginning,
You can slightly feel the delicate line you walk with her is thinning,

But your attraction is renewed when your buddies come up and say,
'Hey man.. don't get mad, but your girlfriend looks really freaking hot today, '
You look, and her simple blue eyes are glowing like fire,
And you think that of this night, you'll never tire

As you're both lying on the couch, she speaks of what she wants from her life,
And quite honestly, her words impale you like a knife,
Suddenly realization dawns on you as her simple blue eyes look up in question,
She knows, buddy- you weren't really paying attention

And at this moment, you clearly know,
All this girl ever was to you, was a boost to the ego,
On the inside, she was unlike anything you've ever seen,
And those simple blue eyes?
You look a little harder-
They're a shade of complex green.
