Small Kiss, Big Embarrassment Poem by Barrett Breitenbucher

Small Kiss, Big Embarrassment

Mrs. Lenihan told us to put away our books,
It was recess time,
The small crowd of second graders stampeded the cubbies,
Hurrying to zip up our jackets and grab our footballs and jump ropes,
We ran outside,
The sound of high pitched screams like sick birds,
I saw the little quiet blonde girl playing four square,
I walked slowly toward her and asked the question that is now awkward,
Can I kiss you? ,
She giggled and walked with me around the corner,
Can you blame me? ,
I was ten times more curious than george,
And willing to explore more than dora ever has,
I kissed her lightly,
So lightly,
It could have been mistaken for an accident,
I went for another and my good luck kicked in,
She screamed and scurried away,
Less than ten seconds went by,
My whole class knew,
In second grade,
Kissing was frowned apon and made fun of,
But now in high school,
I can brag,
For I am a ladies man.
