Smile Poem by Ashley Wilson

Smile

You walk into school everyday
And pretend that everything's okay
But inside you're dying
When I look into your eyes
I see the troubles that you hide
And realise
That pretty smile you wear
It's just for show

You've fallen in love at just fourteen
Never before has there ever been
Someone that gives you butterflies
Your mind is filled with fantasies
Too blinded by love for you to see
Your dreams come crashing down
Because to them you're just another girl
Nothing special - You're invisible
And it makes you cry at night

You're plagued by fears of failing that test
Worried that whenever you give your best
It's not good enough
Your expectations are climbing high
With everyday that passes by
You're determined to succeed
You always refuse to ask for help
You say you can do everything by yourself
But you're starting to crack

When you look at your reflection
You can count your imperfections
And tears fill your eyes
You're only seven stone two
And your ribs are poking through
But you can still see fat
Because you're troubled by your weight
Trapped in a body that you hate
All you want is to be loved

Your friends don't know about the tears you've cried
Or the pain you feel deep inside
It's all secrets and lies
You don't think you're important enough
To burden others with the stuff
That's tearing you apart
You're breaking down because you just can't cope
You're insecure and you've lost all hope
You've given up on life

You walk into school everyday
And pretend that everything's okay
But inside you're dying
When I look into your eyes
I see the troubles that you hide
And realise
That pretty smile you wear
It's just for show
