Some People In Their Arrogance Poem by Francis Duggan

Some People In Their Arrogance

The sickly bird when near to death will hide itself away
From predator such as cat or dog or larger bird of prey
It even hides itself from it's own kind for to die on it's own
Some of the secrets of Nature's ways to us remain unknown
To those who say a bird does not know of impending death i ask how would you know?
Some people in their arrogance their ignorance only show
A bird must have a memory to recall his ancestral song
We think we know of Nature but thought has proved us wrong,
If a bird is born with memory and a healthy sense of fear
Of other bigger creatures it too could sense death to it near
The reason it crawls into the hedgerow when it has lost the power of flight
To spend it's last hours in peace and quiet and hidden out of sight
Of human kind and predators and in the quietness of death lay
where the maggots of the blow fly will find life in it's decay.
