Something New: Reflections On A Hard Life Poem by Patrick van der Loos

Something New: Reflections On A Hard Life

This is the start of something new.
This isn't where it ends.
A single breath stands not alone.
Life goes on.

If you could know the story;
These feelings, I fear to share.
The roads I wished I'd taken;
And the ones I wish I never had.

Sometimes a secret
Just becomes too deep.
A little too much for me to bear.

I only wish I knew someone
With whom this could be shared.

That sorrowed secret longing.
You might see it in my eyes,
A hinting of my past.

Little pieces of me
That have lives of their own
I think we all have our mysteries
Myself more than most.

Sometimes I say a word, or two.
Then just let the moment pass

Past lives have me mesmerized
If only the pain wasn't so much to bear

Dark times, and dark places
They don't always have to be.

Everyday, a new situation
A little less control
But they're all just lessons learned
On this crazy road.

This is the start of something new.
This isn't where it ends.
A single breath stands not alone.
……
Life goes on.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
We all have things, or moments in our past; that our minds always seem to be attached to. The proverbial ghost in the closet. This poem came about a couple years ago, after a friend unexpectedly committed suicide.

I'd started writing it as a reflection of things that I wish I could have told the person. But through the process, it really became more of a reflection of my own experience. But I think anyone who has been through a hard time, and tried to explain it to others could relate to. How do you describe the indescribable?
