Sun 1- Salutations To Surya - The Sun God Poem by Geeta Radhakrishna Menon

Sun 1- Salutations To Surya - The Sun God

Rating: 4.9

Salutations to the brilliant Sun God - Surya;
Presiding deity of the eastern mountains,
Where the sun rises majestically with a smile!

Salutations to the brilliant Sun God - Surya;
Protecting deity of the western mountains,
Where the sun sets gracefully with an amusing nod!

Salutations to the creator of a wonderful day;
Pulsating with brilliant light, life and love,
When the world rejoices this fantastic energy of Surya!

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I am beginning a new series on Surya - The Sun God. In India, Surya or Sun is worshipped as God. There are plenty of Stotras or Hymns in Sanskrit in praise of the Sun God. There is an Upanishad named ‘Suryopanishad' exclusively devoted to the myriad powers of the Sun God. I have selected few verses and interpreted them to give it the form of a poem so that all poets can enjoy reading and comprehending the essence of these hymns as given in the ancient spiritual texts of India.

The Earth without the sun - or Surya would be like Mars. Good poem Geeta.

2. The Gayatri Mantra is a praise for the Sun God. It reads " ऊं भूर्भुव: स्व: तत्सवितुर्वरेण्यं भर्गो देवस्य धीमहि। धियो यो न: प्रचोदयात्।" read as " Om Bhur Bhuvah Swah Tat Savitur Varenyam Bhargo Devasya Dheemahi Dhiyo Yo Nah Prachodayaat"

Gayatri Mantra is seen in many scriptures including Suuryopanishath. The oldest entry is noticed in Rig Veda. Pointed out here to emphasise that Suurya is one of the oldest dieties
