Take It Up With Uncle Sam Poem by october bradley

Take It Up With Uncle Sam

I cut my hair, with the pair
Of rusty scissors from Mamma’s desk drawer.
I wore the hat, my daddy sat
On the desk next to his door.
I threw out every skirt and dress, into one big old mess
Outside on the lawn.
And when my parents came back, they almost had a heart attack:
Their baby girl was gone.

And my mamma says:
“I taught you better,
I don’t care whether
Or not you lost the war.
As long as you look nice,
There’s no need to sacrifice,
You don’t gotta worry no more.”
But there’s no way I can be
Someone who isn’t me,
That’s not who I am.
And if you don’t like it,
Don’t throw a fit,
Take it up with Uncle Sam.

The read the note, that I wrote,
They took in every word.
It said I had to go, and they didn’t know
Just how bad I hurt.
But the part that got to them the most, is when I wrote:
“I have my own say!
I know it didn’t work out, and I had my doubts,
I’m sorry, Mamma, it didn’t go your way.”

And my mamma says:
“I taught you better,
I don’t care whether
Or not you lost the war.
As long as you look nice,
There’s no need to sacrifice,
You don’t gotta worry no more.”
But there’s no way I can be
Someone who isn’t me,
That’s not who I am.
And if you don’t like it,
Don’t throw a fit,
Take it up with Uncle Sam

But my mamma says:
“I taught you better,
I don’t care whether
Or not you lost the war.
As long as you look nice,
There’s no need to sacrifice,
You don’t gotta worry no more.”
But there’s no way I can be
Someone who isn’t me,
That’s not who I am.
And if you don’t like it,
Don’t throw a fit,
Take it up with Uncle Sam

If you don’t like it,
Take it up with Uncle Sam.
That’s not who I am,
So take it up with Uncle Sam.

If you don’t like it,
Take it up with Uncle Sam.
That’s not who I am,
So take it up with Uncle Sam.

Take it up with Uncle Sam!

And my mamma says:
“I taught you better,
I don’t care whether
Or not you lost the war.
As long as you look nice,
There’s no need to sacrifice,
You don’t gotta worry no more.”
But there’s no way I can be
Someone who isn’t me,
That’s not who I am.
And if you don’t like it,
Don’t throw a fit,
Take it up with Uncle Sam.

Take it up with Uncle Sam!
Take it up with Uncle Sam!
Take it up with Uncle Sam!
Take it up with Uncle Sam!

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This is a song I wrote about how other people can't tell you who to be. You got to be who you are, not who others think you are. You lead your own way, choose your own path, and light your own light. PS: It's a country song.
