Taken For Granted Poem by Andrew Johnson

Taken For Granted

I remember when your eyes lit up when she was on time
You made such a big deal
Yet I do that each and every day
Do you realise how that made me feel?
Appreciate Me

I understand he has no Dad
I always help him when I can, when I’m outside
You give him so much extra care
Because I don’t demand it, your time I’ll be denied
Value me

I am aware the shy ones require encouragement
That the boisterous ones need taming
But doesn’t everyone deserve that praise?
Because I’m here always behaving
Acknowledge me

I know I don’t shine in the smart group
Not a battler either though
I’m just floating in the middle
But extra attention I’d still like you know
Help Me

I realise they deserve praise for their sporting achievements
They’re so talented, I’m improving, I’m just okay
I’ve told you I play basketball before
You don’t ask, but my team won on Saturday
Accept Me

I study for that test, I do what I am told
Yet I am not made to feel worthwhile
Because you don’t really show care towards me
You’ll never see my eyes light up when I smile
See Me
