The Ballad Of Gypsy-Joe (Part Two) Poem by Dave SmithWhite

The Ballad Of Gypsy-Joe (Part Two)

He came out from the country;
From the place where he was made.
From a plain they called 'The One-Tree',
And a rural life so staid.
He used to live so humbly,
Until he caught the bug.
Or to put it a bit more bluntly:
He craved for fame like drugs.

He came out from the country;
With a studied boyish charm.
His voice the smoothest honey,
That yet set off alarms.
Some womenfolk went crazy,
When they heard that yokel croon:
Their hearts torn out like daisies,
Beneath a lazy moon.

He came out from the country;
With stars bright in his eyes.
Ambition was his entry,
To the world of scam and lies.
With an outlook: open, sunny,
He hid his darker side.
While many thought him funny,
He indulged his sin of pride.

He came out from the country;
Self-dealing, underhand.
He played his cards too glumly,
As greed became his brand.
But some knew him, a runty,
Cruel and dangerous man.
Fixated by his jealousy,
He delved while Eve would span.

He came out from the country;
From his wretched, ruined clan.
He'd left his girl Eve Bundy,
To struggle in quicksand.
Why his mind was weak and spongy,
He couldn't understand,
That he'd become so punchy,
With every blow he'd land.

He came out from the country;
And left behind him woe.
His gambling grift too grungy,
To lift his crass dumb show
He came out from the country;
When all told him to go,
Like a brambling flighty budgie,
'Just leave us Gypsy-Joe! '

So you can leave with your devils. Gypsy,
'Cause we've all seen through your act.
You're just not on the level, Gypsy,
For your true worth's been unpacked.
So you can leave with your devils, Gypsy,
And take your demons too.
We've seen you seethe with evil, Gypsy,
When your plans have gone askew.

No-one grieves for your revels, Gypsy.
Despite your boast and crow.
Believe us, you're so disheveled, Gypsy.
You have no afterglow.
You still cavil, at the judge's gavel,
And it's heavy blow.
But how you travel, as your mind unravels,
No-one wants to know.
'Just leave us Gypsy-Joe! '
