The Battle That Surrounds Me Poem by Shelley Williams

The Battle That Surrounds Me

They have raised their weapons
against me that I might know.
After all that I've been through
there is no broken heart to show.

They march to a different beat
and there is nothing to confess.
I still don't know the reasons
nor am I an emotional mess.

Both sides fight a daring battle
but nobody finds relief.
False blame and lies are there
to hijack me from my belief.

I strike with my tourettic mind
and they attack me in my sleep.
The battle has lasted a few years
and the struggle now runs deep.

There is nothing they can do
when choice is the christian life.
They may throw punches of hate
and use force of bitter strife.

My wall is one of ignorance
and the haters can't get through.
My mind thoughts are destructive
but I overcome what they do.

I rise up happy and triumphant
unhurt by those who follow me.
I will not listen to the voices
that try to destroy my family tree.

I protect those on each branch
from the doom of their attack
Trouble will not find me alone
when my family has my back
