The Burning Question Poem by Karen Wood

The Burning Question

Have you ever had a feeling
That burns you deep inside?
No drink can quell the raging thirst
Nor food can satisfy?

Does it feel just like a hunger,
Yet for what you cannot say?
No matter what you try it seems
It just won’t go away.

When late at night you’re wide awake
When you know that you should sleep.
And do you rise to greet the day
So tired that you could weep?

Does the warmth of sunshine comfort you
But sunlight hurts your eyes?
When you gaze out at the stars at night,
Do you feel so energized?

Do you hear the breeze that whispers
Through the leaves upon the trees?
Does it make you shudder deep inside
And tremble to your knees?

Does the cool night air around you
Feel just like a love’s caress?
Does it stir a yearning deep inside
You’ve tried hard to repress?

Do you feel a loneliness
Even when you’re in a crowd?
Do you fear to voice the words
You long to say out loud?

Do your passions run so very deep
They burn you to the core?
Yet no matter how fulfilled you seem
Your soul cries out for more?
