The Closing Dance Poem by Ashley Meinert

The Closing Dance

The swaying of trees
And rain pouring down
I lift my hands to the black sky and dance all around
The warm rain feels soothing against my cold skin
I spin around laughing and feel ecstatic within
I do not feel alone on a night like this
Where people come together and unite with great bliss
The piercing music drowns out voices but I know they are still here
Last time was different there is nothing to fear
We dance with one another gripping on so tight
Even in this blackness I see a breakthrough of light
The storm is slowing down raindrops leave their final marks
The music finally fades and now I stand silently in the dark
I look around searching
And thinking where did they go
All running away together they leave me here alone
My body begins to tremble tears fill my blood-shot eyes
I collapse to the ground knowing this is our final goodbye

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This poem is about the pain and loneliness I experienced when my best friends left for college. They met close friends and created a new life. I feel like everything has changed and It is hard to cope with.
