Who knows what dark side lurks in humanity's heart?
An emergence that propels calamity from the start
Will history record us as 'humans who destructed Earth? '
Or is there salvation for everlasting birth?

Can we stem violence worldwide with leaders corrupt?
Wish I had answers before life's tenure is up
Could the land be nurturned and treated with respectuful care?
While those in power careen Earth in despair and disrepair?

Why must some humans need hatred for sustenance?
Why do these clusters give way to obstinance?
Are there more bad persons than good ones?
Is human nature more akin to that of the Huns?
Than of the enlightened ones?

Was Machiavelli right in the need to control humanity?
Or we would easily plunge into vicious insanity
What is any darker than society's blunder
Of organized religions' war and plunder?

Where are the Gods of Peace?
When will this catastrophe cease?
Why is fatal disease spreading throughout the world?
Casting all life in dreaded peril unfurled?

Are Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse galloping once more
Spewing pestilence, famine and war like before?
Why isn't there an abundance of sincere loving people?
Or is my perception waning feeble?

Searched far and wide, high and low
The more I've learned, the more I need to know
Why are most in positions of power out of touch?
Causing capitalism to fail too much?

Is it because tenancy of life is short?
That people must let their feelings distort?
Does a savage chord exist in the primal-human genetic line?
Can biogenetic evil emerge at any time, undefined?

Is man inherently violent and evil?
Are goodness and peace irretrievable?
Why must survival's struggle expose the hole
Of a dark side dormant in the soul?

Johnny Mercer was right: we must 'accentuate the positive, '
And analyze the causative
Oh, dark side, that exists in us all
Remain dormant, avert society's fall
