The Day The Rains Came

Rating: 4.5

Today is the day that the rain wouldn't end.
We knew it was coming, on that you can depend.
I spent the last hours preparing the yard;
It didn't matter, because it rained too hard.

The water poured down with such a force,
It came so hard that I had great remorse.
The drains were full, I was feeling its wrath.
The rain started to overflow and cut its own path.

I worked in the rain until I was all aglow,
I cut new trenches to change the flow.
My glasses were fogged and I could hardly see.
All the water around, made me want to flee.

My work helped a little, but to no avail;
Water was cutting its own winding trail.
The stones on the paths were washing away;
Another drain plugged up, this was no time to play.

Luckily I had cleaned and worked the day before,
That did eliminate some of the problems galore.
The mud was being washed in rivulets,
And pouring down the drains; Oh, what a mess.

I wouldn't let the conditions beat me down,
But my usual smile had turned to a frown.
Mother Nature was a force, quite hard to deal with;
When She made up her mind, it wasn't a myth.

There were times that I thought it would never end.
Dear Lord what have you done to your sometimes friend?
Things may never again be the same?
Is this life just a joke, or a painful game?

I've worked as hard as a man can do;
Not ever seeing this day that I'd rue.
The day the rains came really did change my life.
I'll never again attend a gun fight, with only a knife.
