The Deafening Poem by Aimee Nell

The Deafening

And my chest caves in,
As we collapse back into the silence that deafens us.
Tell me now,
What has happened?
What happened to the two broken souls
That made each other whole again?
The two closed hearts
Trying to unlock each other?
The two people
Who spoke about nothing important
Just to distract each other from the pain
For a little while.
And now we collapse back into the silence that deafens us.
So tell me now,
What happened to forever?
What happened to the promises
That were not so easily broken?
The words we did not twist into lies so simply.
The sentences we never turned to knives,
To carve the insults into each others skins.
The way we do now
And we collapse into the silence that deafens us.
Will it stay this way?
Or can we exist as one?
Running away or walking hand in hand?
Can we let our hearts beat together?
Or cease breathing altogether?
Only you can answer.
But only more questions come.
As we collapse into the silence that deafens us.
