The Dreadful Truth Poem by Fiona Schwartzinoff

The Dreadful Truth

Rating: 1.0

I looked in the mirror
And a reflection gazed back.
It was me.
But not the way I saw myself -
It was the way the mirror saw me.
The reflection threw back her head and laughed.
The sound reverberated through dark caves
And spilled a smothering fog about me.
“You’ve deceived yourself! ”
Now I walk through life with the memory of my reflection,
My true reflection, haunting me with the dreadful truth:
I am a sinner.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
All our lives we look through our own eyes without thinking of how other people would see us. If we really thought about this, we’d realize just how awful we are and just how much we must try to improve ourselves.

well, fiona, i like this very much. and i enjoy the poet note as well, though i probably don't care TOO much how other people see me........as long as they don't tell lies about me or incorrectly interpret me. ok, i may deceive myself some, but i like the way i view myself for the most part, and don't want to work hard enough to correct my (few) bad qualities. my favorite line: Now I walk through life with the memory of my reflection, ... all the lines are good. and i like the punctuation. you either proofread this one, or you did a fine job without proofreading. a sinner? for real? what are your sins, besides sometimes letting type-os get by ya? of course you and most/many other poets capitalize the first word of each line. i do not usually do this, but i do not disapprove; i'm just making an observation. and again, i find i have been trapped in what is sometimes a mistake: assuming that the narrator of the poem is actually also the poet her/himself. perhaps you, like me, are not really a sinner? ? ? and this is not about YOU? thanks for sharing. bri :)
