The Gift

-Stephanie Kjaerbaek

She walked across hills and plains

With the basket carried in her hands

As she searched for him in vain

A familiar human being disappeared

Down the path that leads back to Nepal

Through cliffs and mountain vales revealed

Only as eyes drop down from the summit

And as she heads out on the edge of evening

The Northern temperatures plummet.

She traversed the curves, concave and convex

To find him immersed in his projects

She saw his image through the glass

A reflection in hat and scarf from the past

And he was laughing with her, in jest

Not knowing she came with the future gift

As he returned to resort to his past

Fixing what was not meant to last

She arrived with the gift too soon but not too fast.

He looked over at her, beckoning

Two girls, one of each time, that was his reckoning.
