The Hedgehog (Mr. Dillip, This Is Poetry)
Sometime we find some gain
sometime we give others pain
when we tell them the truth
when we ask them to look
into their own works of their minds.
It irks them, it whirls them,
it wrecks their integrity
because they want to be
what they want to be.
They want to be the hedgehogs
on those pleasant streets of spring
where autumn leaves have left
only the cryptic look of winter
which is incomprehensible
to those who walk and look
for scenic inspiration and sunshine.
And though many may be those hours
when the world may seem cold and unknown
they survive, they make their minds work
they make their own provisions
and as they live everyone calls them
the hedgehogs yet they never feel hurt.
