The King's Gambit Poem by Kondwani Simwaba

The King's Gambit

Rating: 5.0

The King's Gambit
So I played a real life gambit;
I gave away a pawn and in my efforts to regain it, I lost a minor piece.
I ventured into the Misty Mountains like a Hobbit;
As I emerged at dawn, not a tactic nor a strategy could I retain.
Now I find myself at a constant war in my futile pursuits for inner peace.
See I hadn't even developed my other pieces;
Hadn't even Castled and now my King is exposed as I pray for a counter play.
I hadn't even been granted my wishes;
Hadn't even made a plan and now I am baffled,
As an inevitable knight Sacrifice is imposed; every day I am prone to be in affray.
I played a real life King's gambit;
Lost a number of pieces, time keeps on ticking as my future looks bleak,
And now I find myself on stranger tides as my pearl keeps sinking.
I had a fork but couldn't grab it;
I gave in to my caprices and the clock keeps beeping,
My game looks weak as danger strides and I twirl into endless thinking;
I played a real life gambit that has me placed in this Zugzwang;
But I am confident I will escape it by saying Checkmate before my time ends…
