The Necessity Of Sound? Poem by Rachel Mac

The Necessity Of Sound?

All around there is so much noise,
We use words like our personal toys.
What would happen if we were all to stop?
And get so quiet we could hear a feather drop?

What if silence was all we heard?
And we didn't utter a single word?
What if we went through life silent and mute,
Without the utterance of a single squeal or toot?

Why do we find it necessary to speak,
Billions of times in the average week?
Don't meaningful gestures and pointed glances,
Get things across as easy as our word dances?

Would it really be the end of time,
If we chose to not speak, but to instead mime?
If we chose not to utter a single sound,
Would life as we know it really fall down?
