The Notes Poem by Rich Harney

The Notes

The notes

The notes just pick themselves up
off the keys and dance.
one by one they put on wigs,
splatter lipstick all over the ivories
and act as if everyone's looking.

Ebonys follow in suits
with paten leathers,
5 in a cluster is the latest fashion.

Quarters and rests and other kinky things
jump down and under,
on top of pedals that are
already crowded with banana toes.

Everyone wants a little pedal in their life
just enough to slink up off the keys
and do a beige soft shoe into the blue notes,

under the eyes of course of
lipstick and wigs and other masquerades.
