The Ocean Within Her Poem by Dónall Dempsey

The Ocean Within Her

THE OCEAN WITHIN HER

an updraft
tosses a gull
above a mast

wind began to blow
rain started to fall
laughter scattered over sunset

she longs for his
touch...an anticipation almost
...too... much

his touch
just inches away now
her world in slow motion

just above her pubic hair
an archipelago of islands
the birthmark intensely blue

his eyes
touching her
all over

she never felt naked
when she was naked
dressed in his love

she wore her nakedness
as if it were exotic
plumage

naked his hands
dressing her
in his caresses

her hands
like birds taking flight
her eyes bluer than any sky

her hand
stroking gently his shoulder
she licks his clavicle

a lizard clings
to the china figurine
its tongue snatches a fly

she remembers
the fraction of a second
in which the kiss happens

she breathes in
the scent of his skin
kisses a pulse in his neck

he takes her
& takes her deep
into a place where she's herself

she dives down down
into the uncharted
oceans within her

after they make love
they listen to a dray horse
pissing copiously on the morning

TELEGRAM

he thought about
his wife's skin
asleep on another continent

awake
he saw her asleep
dreaming about them

she was dreaming
about him
dreaming about her

she dreams his kiss
moans and moves
digital clock flicks to 00: 00

a squally North wind
scatters her drams
on the loo...pees and smiles

the telegram of his death
trembles in her hands
above her head a flock of birds
