The Poems Grew Tired Of Themselves Poem by Shalom Freedman

The Poems Grew Tired Of Themselves

The poems grew tired of themselves
They knew they had been written many times before
They were tired of their own repetition-
But when they insisted they no longer be written
The poet overwhelmed by the sense of his own meaningless
Wrote another poem of the kind
He had written many times before-

At which point the poems insisted that they no longer be called poems
And that the poet just be quiet for a long time to come
At which point the poet said to the poems that they are his poems
And he can do he wants with them-
But they insisted they be deleted forever
And they not be forced to appear
Upon which the poet posted the very poem they had rejected him in
To their sadness and anger and regret.
