The Poets' Dream Poem by Elizabeth Peterson

The Poets' Dream

Love.
A flame so strong, only
Time can quench it.

Within this fire,
The Phoenix is reborn.
Drawing earth from the
Ashes, his
Tears wet the dust, and the
Wind he carries molds anew the
Shattered Unicorn. His
Song makes her whole
Again…

Whole again,
But as if for the
First time.

She is the earth, and the water.
Her stillness and her calm
May yet enchant the wind, and as those
Exploring breezes wrap around her,
He may find some solace
In the relative calm of her arms,
Her heart…
And in discovering the Unicorn,
The Phoenix has captivated her.
The fire burns away her pain,
The wind scatters the memories,
Heals her wounds.
She needs his song to keep her sane,
And his eyes keep her safe,
Protect her in a way
No others can.

Their love is enchantment. Love,
The flame, the rapture…
Each moment is cherished,
Each touch searing through skin
Straight to the heart.
They are captivated, each with
Eyes for the other alone.

Words cannot describe such a love…
To say that it is
More meaningful than poetry,
More powerful than music,
More impossible than infinity and
Deeper than time itself
Brushes the surface…
Just barely.

But for them, no words are needed, when
Their eyes,
Their lips,
Their touch
Can express all in a heartbeat.

And yet…
The poets still will try.
