We stood in the fields
As mute observers when
They raised the flag
Chanting victory to the poor
Long live freedom
As the flag was unfurled
Petals were strewn in the air
Each one like a dead eye
Of the child taking birth
In the dilapidated hut
Of the simmering slum
They snatched away our
Childhoods and youths
Our earnings and lands
Our voices and right to live
And we were happy
They sold us promises
