The Problem Poem by Alan Gotthardt

The Problem

Rating: 5.0

The problem is not that I have nothing to say,
The problem is that I have no way of saying it.

What is it? One might ask
'It' is actually many things
It are the things that keep you awake at night,
It are the things that tell you what you love,
It are the things that give you butterflies,
It are the feelings that you hide.

The problem is not that I have feelings,
The problem is that I know not what they are.

They scare me but the fear I feel
Often comes too late.

To say I hate feelings would be misleading
For feelings can not, in themselves, make others.

The problem is not that I hate feelings,
The problem is that I do not speak their language.

The language of emotions is strong and complicated
The language of emotions is one I do not pretend to understand
The language of emotions is poetry.

So why do I write poetry?

The problem is not that I have nothing to say,
The problem is that I have no other way of saying it.

That is why I write poetry.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I wrote this while trying to figure out if I love the woman I am dating. It is hard for me to understand my feelings, as if they are a dead language I am trying to bring back to life.
