The Remedy Poem by Samlayy Broussard

The Remedy

Walking Past The Cathedral, I Smell The Toxic Fumes Of Gas. A Gas That Was Unheard Of. All I Could Do Was Walk Faster. One Foot In Front Of The Other, I Heard Laughter. Turning Corners And Bumping Into People Just Coming By. I Coudnt Get Away From The Laughter, It Was Haunting Me, The Smell Of Gas Overwhelming. Then, I Came To A Sudden Stop... It Was A White Picket Fence In Front Of A Child Hood Home I Once Knew. I Opened The Gate, And Ran Inside. No One. I No Longer Could Smell The Toxic Fumes And Hear The Unwanted Laughter. My Lungs Became Strong Again, No Longer Frail From Breathing Something Other Than What Im Supposed To Consume. I Collapsed To The Floor. My Head Felt Light, I Lifted It To See What Was Around Me... This, Was The Ballet Room. The Room Where People Were Taught The Beautiful Dance That I Remembered As A Child... Was So Graceful. The Endless Wall Of Mirrors, And The Rail... Oh The Rail Was So Brittle And Some Parts Broken. I Stood, Then Walked Out Of The Room And Into The Next. Then I Saw It, The Piano. The One Where Children Played With The Keys Not Knowing What They Were Doing... Just Happy They Could Make Some Sort Of Sound... Some Sort Of Music. I Sat, Touched One Key, And Laid Both Hands Down. I Began To Play. These Keys Touched My Fingertips As If They Were Meant To Be Together. They Went Hand In Hand, Like How A Heart Needs A Beat. Or How A Bird Sings Its Songs. I Opened My Mouth, And Sang. I Never Knew I Could Make A Vocal Noise. I Was Forever Autistic, So I Thought. But, I Kept Going, Singing Like There Was No Tomorrow.
And For Once, I Never Thought About The Laughter The Toxic Fumes That Chased Me All My Life.
I Just Sang,
Not Caring...
About The Future
