The Sands Of Time Poem by jen capaldi

The Sands Of Time

Rating: 3.1

I dream every night
And every night my dreams are the same
I dream of sand and time

I dream of sand
Sand that surrounds me
I gaze all around me and sand is all I can see
The sand stings my eyes and it scours my skin
Other times I feel like it’s slowly burying me alive
Like I am sinking into a quagmire, the more I struggle the quicker I sink
Is the sand in my dreams a desert
This vast, unbroken sea of sand
A desert whose visage is unceasingly changed with the restless winds
In my minds’ eye it doesn’t appear to be a desert
But dreams are sometimes abstract
They don’t always reveal their design

I dream of time
Time is such a subjective thing
Sometimes it seems time stretches over an eternity
Other times it feels like it lasts only as long as the beat of your heart
But the time I spent with you was sublime, you had me entranced
For us it seems as if time was suspended, yet it seems as if time
elapsed in the blink of an eye
Our time together should have been ad infinitum, infinite and
amaranthine
Our love forever illuminated by the sun, moon and stars
Then one day my life eclipsed, an opaque shroud dropped over my life
shutting out the light
You left one day without an explanation without even a goodbye
All I am left with is the ghost of you and the memory of the life and
dreams I should have had
But you stole them away and took them with you

Slowly I begin to understand my dreams of sand and time
I begin to see how my dreams can come true
Though not in the way I would have liked but I am left the way you
chose them to be
This is the reality I was left with
Like time kept by an hourglass
Grain after grain of sand falls
It falls slowly,
So slow I can see each piece of sand as original as a snowflake
Piece by piece they pile atop of each other making its own small dune
inside of the glass
It falls so quickly,
So quickly all I can discern is the soft swishing stream of falling sand
One grain falling out of place can cause the mound of sand suddenly to
shift as if displaced by the strong desert wind
Time is what consumes me now
In the wake of your absence
I am inside of the hourglass
Being slowly consumed by the sands of time

As for me, I like very very long poems that take me for a walk in thought. Well done, Mrs!
