The Shut Door Poem by Shahul Hameed

The Shut Door

A single bulb glimmered sickly
on the verandah shedding its pallid light
as if to deepen the darkness around

The door was shut tight
his hand raised
knuckles bent and poised for knocking
he waited…

Eager for a sign or sound
of someone he wished to meet again
after all these agonizing years…

A bandicoot scurried across the floor
an owl hooted in the distance….

Nothing more except
the heavy sigh of silence
searing the darkness

Quietly he turned back
and dissolved into the night.
