The Siege Poem by Alex Searle

The Siege

Rating: 5.0

I see the skulls on the desert plain
I hear the vultures sing my name
Deaf to the screams and blind to the scenes
I'm lost without a hope or means
Confusion, i-illusion

I walk through the ruins of the desert city
I hear the cries for the king's pity
And round the wreck of our lost love
The battle-fog still looms above
Like the delirium of the centurion

How long do we play this game?

Far away from the city streams
Across the valley of broken dreams
Down the gorge and along the way
There lies the siege of my heart
Come through the walls of the city besieged
Feel the hearts of a people bereaved
Just another empire overtaken
Just another soldier crestfallen

I hear your voice in the desert groan
I turn my back and head for home
And as the gore fades away
Another night clouds the day
It's ephemeral, only natural

Another night clouds the day
And I wonder if I will find a way
