The Son Of A Servant Poem by Prabhu Francis

The Son Of A Servant

In a lavish mansion
Close friends and fam'ly gathered
For its the master's grand son's
Birthday get-together.

Folks in grand attire
While sipping glasses of wine
Engaged in joyful chatter
With their near and dear ones.

Children too instantly
made friends with other children
And went to have fun quickly
In the well groomed garden.

In such a swanky place
Appeared a crudely dressed boy,
Wearing but a lovely face,
Who looked forward to enjoy.

His ill-fortuned father
had brought him along to help
On this hectic days labour
To earn some more for himself.

He too with diligence,
Throughout the late night's party,
Complied with all instructions
From each and everybody.

Later when most had gone,
Freed a little while and spared,
He picked an ignored balloon
That was under a chair

And ran toward some kids
Then played along by himself
Until grand mama saw this
And ordered him to help.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I was one of the guests in the party watching the boy who must be around 6-7 years old.
The boy mentioned in the poem appeared to be the son of a servant who was brought in to help. Interestingly the boy seemed very happy through out and was carefree about what was happening around him, including the fact that he was inappropriately treated, and that there were other children of his age who were dressed well and treated with care and dignity by their parents and others. It disturbed me that his childhood was ignored and he being ignorant about it. It disturbed me to see that the society found it acceptable to treat him badly because he is after all the son of a servant.

Engaged in joyful chatter; with the muse of life. Nice work.
