The Strength I Need Poem by Rusty Ed Gibson

The Strength I Need

Looking for some answers
to my messed up life
I Looked up to the Heavens
and I had to ask why

I am just a simple man
I’m nothing like you
Just what is it dad
that I should do

I got up and made coffee
and there it was all along
My Dads worn old Bible
that he used to read from

His place had been marked
where he read from last
as I opened it I heard
these words from the past

Try to Love each other
and always do what’s right
Take care of your children
and fight the good fight

Live in God and go to church
and you’ll never go that wrong
Put your family above all others
and help them to be strong

The Best thing my parents
ever gave to me
wasn’t cars or money
but the Strength I need
The will to keep going
no matter how bad
The courage to stand up
and how to be a man

I Looked out the Window
and the clouds rolled on by
The future seemed brighter
than before I asked why

There’s so much my parents left
though its sometimes hard to see
All the goodness in my heart
is the best thing they gave to me

When I get to thinking
I don’t have the strength
I remember how my old man
used to laugh and wink
He never worried or wondered why
cause the Lord and the Good Book
always got him by

The best thing my parents
ever gave to me
wasn’t cars or money
but the Strength I need
The will to keep going
no matter how bad
The courage to stand alone
and how to be a Dad
