The Ten Fifteen Poem by Lulu Gee

The Ten Fifteen

Rating: 5.0

I love to catch a train............I do
Friends say, where you going Lu?
I think I’ll board the ten fifteen
And sit upon the velveteen
As the engine picks up speed
I notice those with books to read
Dour faces looking bored
Fingers hitting a keyboard
Briefcases with papers bulging
Mobiles that are quite disturbing
Men in shiny city suits
Girls in toasty Uggy boots

I’m on the South Eastern line
Travelling in warm sunshine
Pretty stations passing by
And fields of rape and is that rye?
Village’s with roofs of thatch
And on the green a cricket match
Gardens and courtyards too
And here’s a tunnel to go through
‘Tickets please’ the guard doth cry
Folks all rummage to supply
Hedgerows and willow trees
Clouds scudding on the breeze

To the buffet car I go
Glass of ruby red Bordeaux
Cloths of linen, crystal glass
Window sign that reads First Class
Waiter in crisp white livery
Canapés piquant and savoury
New potatoes, Rainbow trout
Seasoned veg and sauerkraut
Raspberries in creamy fool
My! How my taste buds drool
Filter coffee, petit four
All the things that I adore

Steel on steel ever faster
The driver a hard taskmaster
Now we’re on a steady climb
Oh! I hope we’ll be on time
Row on row of abodes
Cars and trucks on busy roads
People rushing to and fro
Unaware of friend or foe
Screeching, hissing, signal box
Now we’re coming to a stop
Amid the station’s atmosphere
I’m so excited...... I am here! ! ! !
