The Twittering Song That The Goldfinch Does Sing Poem by Francis Duggan

The Twittering Song That The Goldfinch Does Sing

The twittering song that the Goldfinch does sing
Awakens the memories of a far away Spring
When the hawthorns were in their white blooms of the May
And the wild born birds sung at the dawn of the day
With red band around bill and brown, fawn and gold
So nice for to hear and lovely to behold
A goldfinch is singing on a sunlit black wattle tree
A bird I do know well and often do see
A beautiful bird with a familiar song
Once heard that you never again could get wrong
In the grove by my old home when I was a boy
Learning about Nature I used to enjoy
And the song of a goldfinch awakens an old memory
A beautiful bird so familiar to me.
