The Vale Poem by Barry Kavanagh

The Vale

On the shore you did find me

Crestfallen and alone

To pledge my allegiance to the beauty silent sea

I kneeled to her accolade and she struck her sword on me

Virtue not valour, not veiled, not veiled on me!

Oh my! Oh my! did she roar and she spat in disgust at me

She dented my shining armour and cut my wounded knee

So I sided with the devil

And cursed the shining sea

He veiled me of purple mantle

And bathe my wounded knee

A sour kiss he knight me

A knighted wretch is me

But I killed the king and castle

To play the game of love

Die I rolled to die of pain, the pain not requited love

In the vale you will find me

Where I gave my life for love

To sow the seeds of sorrow

Goodbye, goodbye my love
