The Walk Poem by Tiny Rekoj

The Walk

I held your hand as we walked down to the beat.
I couldn’t help but notice you kept staring down at your feet.
So I looked down and both your shoes were untied.
I squeezed your hand we both stopped mid stride.
I kneeled down slowly and looked up at you.
Your eyes glistened as I started to tie your shoe.
I finished and stood up and the tear just missed my face.
I looked in your eyes but your heart was in a different place.
I caressed your thumb and we continued to walk.
I screamed inside just begging for you to talk.
I leaned over and gently kissed your cheek.
You didn’t move, make a sound or even sneak a peak.
Our hands stayed clasped but my thoughts slipped away.
This wasn’t happening, this cant be, there is just no way!
I’m not gonna give up, not gonna give you to the world like this.
Cause I know at the end of this walk, it’s you I’m gonna miss.
We came to the end and you finally turned to look at me.
With a sharp smile you released your hand and I stood as still as a tree.
You left my side for his and I felt my world crumble and burst.
He may have you now but always remember, you were daddy’s first.
