They Think I Live Poem by Rebecca Lawrence

They Think I Live

They don't know I'm dead
They don't see the blood
They think my heart still beats
They ignore the rotting flesh
They don't know I'm dead
If they saw the truth
I would not stand among you
They would put me in the ground
Cover me with dirt
Morn the loss of a daughter, sister, friend
But they don't know that death is not the end
Cause I'm still alive
Since they don't know I'm dead

I talk, I laugh, I sing
They think that this is life
But you don't need to breathe to act
You don't need a heart to sing
You don't need a voice to talk
If only you have the will
To make them believe
Then they won't know you're dead
They watch you walk and see you dance
But the dance of death is not so different from that of life
The dead can walk and we can run
Though we flee from the sun
They don't see that I'm dead
The think I'm just like them
They don't know that I'm living lies
Because I don't live at all

But I'm not the only one
You simply don't recognize
That piece of death we all contain Because death and life are really the same
And you don't know you're dead

You think you live
You think you breathe
You don't know that it's an act
You think you have a heart
You think you have a voice
You don't realize that they're gone
If they were ever there at all
