This Is Not Me Poem by Katherine Rhodes

This Is Not Me

Look at me Look at me
The little girl cried
to her mother while she pounded
the dough with her fist
creating what only by her can be loved

And they all looked away
with barely time to say
‘yes dear’

Look at me Look at me
The young lady cried
to her friends as she slammed
her sixth shot of whiskey
creating someone she thought they’d love

And they all looked away
with barely time to say
‘yes dear’

Look at me Look at me
The woman cried
to her man as she stripped
her clothes and took her pill
ready to do it all for what she thought was love

And they all looked away
with barely time to say
‘yes dear’
