To Cupid Poem by Ndubisi Anslem Otolokpo

To Cupid

TO CUPID

Benignly! it came,
Winds down luxuriantly
In my heart,
Stricken by feelings
Which mellow without
Grudge of fretfulness.

Muffled in its tendering
Hands when the moon
Was awake.
Love!
I once longed for the day
When you will smile at my face

With your spine-tingling excitement
To sell my laurel
For a myrtle wreath
Just for a taste
Of your sublime mood of eternity.
In besot, I believed your beguiling beauty

Now you sear my heart
With your blossom,
Leaving me with a spring of reminisce
And smiles that seem akin to tears
Love!
How unjust you are to nature

With your boundless tide.
But! Why did I make this unthinkable
Pledge of infidelity?
Why did I believe your bedazzle flatters
To have committed the pretty follies
That now gouge my heart.

Oh! I played the fool.
Mad in loathing you is a waste
Of agony.
Love!
You are truly a tyrant of the heart.
