To My Sweet Lie Poem by Lily Ives

To My Sweet Lie

Rating: 5.0

I wore my heart on the sleeve
and laid down my weapons on the table
when you approached me.
You presented to me as a shy,
sweet and a humble guy;
Yet, you came into my life
and kissed me with your plastic mask.

You ignited a flame in my heart,
then left it to burn to ash.
Your last words were etched into my phone screen,
expressing that you wanted more of me,
but that you had to say goodbye because
I was sophisticated, and you were a simple guy.
Which sentence contained your truth
amongst the paragraphs you carefully weaved
to tell me that it won't work between us?
Did you really fear that you're only
holding me back from meeting someone
who can stimulate and challenge
my "hurricane-like mind"?
Or did you mean to tell me
that you've used me as a means
to your undisclosed selfish end?

Which part of your tender kiss was real
and under which evening star's gleam?
You told me that meeting me was like a dream;
I agree because I no longer sleep
since your lies have rudely awakened me.
I kissed your lips but the magic pooled
only beneath my ribs because
our union was a one-way street.
I kissed your palms,
but now I don't remember if they had a pulse -
The veins to your heart were severed from the start.
I leaned my breasts against your chest,
but did I lay all those evenings on a lifecast?

They say that the truth can set you free.
Yet you've chosen to imprison me
by hiding that your soul was already tied
to another human being.
Does she know that at the same time,
you were tenderly caressing me?
I'm hurting, and you aren't here
to soothe the pain by making it right;
perhaps it's because a wrong can't be undone.
