To The Blackwater River Poem by Francis Duggan

To The Blackwater River

From the bogs of Ballydesmond down the fields of Knocknagree
Flow on wandering Blackwater flow on blissfully and free
Down by Cork and Kerry border through the Meadows of Rathmore
At the starting of your journey for the wild Atlantic shore.

Near the Shamrock bridge in Cullen you are joined by Araglen
In the heartland of Duhallow and you journey southward then
And by railway line at Drishane the Finnow waters you greet
In lush and fertile meadows in the Parish of Millstreet.

On through Banteer and through Mallow and the flatlands of Fermoy
And your destiny the ocean with each passing mile draw nigh
And rills and streams and little rivers join you on your sea going way
As through meadows of north east Cork like a wanderer you stray.

Through the finest lands in Ireland you are privileged to flow
Leafy groves and grassy meadows and through fields where corn grow
And near journey end at Youghal you flow like an Inland sea
You who started as a streamlet towards the west of Knocknagree.
