Tom The Climber Poem by Donna Caldwell

Tom The Climber

Rating: 4.0

I'm a friend of Celina's so I've written a rhyme
It's about what happened whilst you went for that climb
The last time she saw you, you was looking quite stiff
Well what do you expect when you jump off a cliff!

The forthcoming trip together made her ever so glad
But her dreams were shattered when she got a ring from your dad
Telling her of the bad news that he'd heard
That his son had been trying to fly like a bird

But unfortunately it did not work out
You had fell quite badly whilst wandering about
Onto a ledge for the rest of the night
And when rescued the day after you did look a sight

Fort William was where you were taken
You were badly bruised and very shaken
Clannad music was playing in your swollen head
Whilst you were propped up in your hospital bed

In the hospital room, you had to stay still
That was because you was seriously ill
So get better soon so you can stay out of bed
And when you climb up a mountain don't fall on your head!

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This is a true story of a climber called Tom. Instead of going on holiday with his friend Celina, he ended up falling off a cliff while climbing. I wrote this poem and he read it while he was in intensive care and he thought it was amusing. He survived and the poem was then published in a small poetry anthology. This was my first poem to be published.
