I used to be hair, and bones.
Like the shadow, I was and I was not -
A spinning wheel whirling in my vertigo,
A barley-drunken donkey in my haze,
A bird with one wing of ignorance,
And one wing of curiosity,
Lost amidst colors, perfume,
And anonymous lights.

I started a huge project like Noah,
Building a tomb for the old self
That seemed like a prison for most,
But was a release into union for me.
Like a snake, without foot or wing,
I crept into the tavern of wisdom
Learning knowledge comes after
Emptiness of the mind,
Then, into heart illumination.

I watched the dancing of evil dusts
Shaken off from my shawl,
The wicked thoughts swept out of my window,
And down the slant of my roof.
Dawn's memory has vanished by nightfall.
I have transformed like alchemy
Transforms copper into gold.
I cleared the mud, and from the mud,
A steel mirror, rust scoured off, was revealed.

The caller and the called, in union,
Both disappeared in the call.
I am now the music in the flute,
The lion in the banner,
The cluster of grapes, the juice,
The cupbearer of eternal wine,
The sword without a trace of soft iron.
Though I too, before, have been
Covered by thorns.
