Tree Poem by Myrtle Thomas

Tree

the tree stands in awesome glory
rattled by wind and summers end
' oh how the strength was yesterdays sprout '
tall as redwoods plank by plank

as your leaves bleed red
from golden veins
on boughs laiden heavy
you dance without cowboy boots
to unheard music in the wind

cry and wail for the world
for you the fortress strong
sewn from seed just like we
limbs lift upword toward the clouds

moss clings green in sheltered shade
as worms wallow by your roots
a giant for a season tethered to soil
bent only by nature, left standing tall

plank by plank..... sawdust sprays
while an eye is upon your stature
to fell you and reap steel blades, oiled
weep you willow for you are naught
and your cradle fell through the night

let the wind howl to your downfall
as nature grooms another seed
colors of autumn now just a picture
only an artist can see your beauty..... or a poet
delights in fantasy in your sight

hollow tree decayed in time
unique in self..... a design of nature
eerie to some a phantam surely
