Trying To Get To Heaven Poem by Dónall Dempsey

Trying To Get To Heaven

Rating: 4.5

I was walking down the road
not remembering

the right direction
was it right...I turned left

at the next
intersection?

My soul
was chatting to my shadow

who awakened now
by a strong sun

kept repeating
sleepily to my soul

“Wot...wot? ”

At the last minute I
realised it was right to turn right

and did so
at the last minute

leaving my shadow
and my soul

still chatting on a white washed wall.

I had to go back
and scrape ‘em off.

“Come on you guys...keep up! ”

They trail shamefacedly
after me.

“We’ll never get to Heaven...at this rate! ”
