Uncountables Count Poem by Paul Hartal

Uncountables Count

Science gauges and quantifies.
It measures and verifies the world
through size and weight, length
and volume.

However, this twists in many ways
our vision and perspectives and
give rise to a mendacious picture
of reality.

For there are many things that count
but defy counting. Thus, the joy of music,
for example, or the quality of a poem,
or of a painting, or the beauty of
flowers for that matter, all transcend
arithmetic.

And then, of course, there is
also this mysterious phenomenon,
known simply as love - which is
an astonishing miracle, as well as
the greatest gift of life- that defies
science because it cannot be sized up
and measured with a ruler.
