Walk With Me Poem by Deo Inji

Walk With Me

Rating: 2.5

Talk to me
Tell me all the places you have been
The different grounds you have trod
And when you had no companionship but God

Tell me all the faces you have seen
The scornful eyes that look to hurt
And the loving eyes eyes that overlook your dirt

Tell me all the things you wanted to say
But nobody was there to listen
During those long and lonely days
And they're all trapped inside of your head
Longing to escape
Into the ears
And into the minds
Of those that would listen
And understand those heavy words you struggle to say
Talk to me

Walk with me
And as we promenade
We cross the wall of difference
That we have imposed on ourselves
And in the system

Walk with me as we blaze the trail
And open a new path
A path without religion
And without tribe
But only One God
And one people
Which nothing can divide
A new path
Where peace sings with the birds
And no bloodshed is found on green grass
A path where love blossoms
With the flowers
And the scent flows to our hearts
Healing its broken parts
A path
Where the night sky is illuminated with bright stars
Arranged in a perfect formation that reads
'Unity is permanently ours'
Walk with me

And as we walk
Every step we take
Corrects our every past mistakes
And as our steps become lighter
The weight of our heavy burden is lifted higher
And we can smile to one another
Because the sun now shines on us brighter
Walk with me

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I was inspired to write this by the perennial outbreak of religious/ethnic/political fatal clashes in some parts of my country. Innocent lives get lost like it's nothing. And it's all threatening the unity of the Nigerian people.
