We Know/We Believe We Now Know Poem by Shalom Freedman

We Know/We Believe We Now Know

We know
We believe we now know
Trillions of years from now
A dying universe
Will long before
No longer have had us in it.
We know
We believe we now know
That trillions of light - years of distance
Will have been traveled by the various bodies of the universe
Without our ever seeing or feeling or needing or wanting us
We know we believe we now know that long after we are dust
So much other dust will forever cease to be
We know we believe we now know however unimportant we are
Our universe is ultimately unimportant also.
