We Never Said Goodbye Poem by Francis Duggan

We Never Said Goodbye

I never did them any harm they never harmed me
And they were people that I so often used to see
Yet we never did become friends just a nod as they walked by
And on my leaving the neighbourhood we never said goodbye.

They are good family people of that I have no doubt
Sedentary in their ways of life and locally known for miles about
Our ways are very different we don't share common ground
A wombat with a mob of roos is never to be found.

The last time that I see them on a bright and sunny day
They pretended not to notice me they looked the other way
As I left their street forever driving towards the open road
Going to try my luck elsewhere in a temporary abode.

They did not pretend to notice me and I merely drove on
They are two neighbours of my past my past forever gone
Quite good and decent people though little in common we did share
Their future is where they live my future is elsewhere.
